VIC:Where is she? Dog attack schoolmates ask
By Belinda Merhab
MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - Classmates of four-year-old Ayen Chol, mauled to death by a
neighbour's pit bull mastiff dog in her Melbourne home, are asking where their friend
is and why she's gone.
Betty Black, director of the St Albans Main Road East Early Learning Centre, said Ayen's
four and five-year-old classmates were inquiring about her, anxious to know where she
is.
And why she isn't at the centre she attended full-time.
She said the children had already been spoken to by staff from the Department of Education
following last week's attack but still don't quite understand.
"The children are asking a lot of questions, we'll have to sit down with them this
afternoon and answer their questions," Ms Black said on Monday.
"They're just inquisitive, where is she, why isn't she here.
"The concept of death to them, they still don't understand."
She said staff were very supporting of each other.
"The more we talk about it, the better we feel," she said.
Ayen, described by her mother Jaclin Appok as an artistic and talkative child, was
watching television with several other children when the dog chased her older cousin into
the St Albans home.
Her cousin Angelina Mayout, 31, was outside when the dog attacked her and followed
her as she ran into the house just after 8pm on Wednesday.
The dog first attacked Ms Mayout's five-year-old daughter Nyadeng Goaer and when Ms
Appok tried to intervene, the dog turned on Ayen, who had been clinging to her mother's
leg.
Ms Black said she was disgusted to hear reports on Monday that racist posts had been
left on a Facebook tribute site dedicated to Ayen.
"When you hear about these people putting these racist remarks, it makes me sick, it's
a child, an innocent child," she said.
"Children are precious, a child has died, the parents are grieving. It's just disgusting."
Ms Black said the centre and its sister centres around the country will release pink
and silver balloons in Ayen's memory on Tuesday.
She said everyone would wear pink and red because pink was Ayen's favourite colour.
Ayen's family arrived in Australia as refugees from Sudan in 2004 and were living at
their cousins' house in St Albans after their own home burned down last month.
The unregistered pit bull mastiff was put down on Thursday by Brimbank City Council.
Victoria Police said the owner of the dog, a 30-year-old St Albans man, had been questioned
and is expected to be charged on summons with offences relating to the Domestic Animals
Act.

NSW: Orkopoulos smoked cannabis with teenagers, jury told =2
Ms Wilson said Orkopoulos had previously smoked cannabis in his Parliament House office
with a 16-year-old intern from his electorate office, during the ALP state conference
in early 2004.
The student, who was "passionately interested in politics", accompanied Orkopoulos
to Sydney for the conference and told police the former MP emailed him advising him to
bring spending money for "newspapers, cigarettes and condoms".
When they arrived in Sydney, Ms Wilson said, Orkopoulos told the intern to empty the
car's glovebox, which contained cigarettes, a bag of cannabis and a packet of condoms.
"It was quite late, nobody was about at this time," she said.
"Having brought the condoms, he put them on the accused's desk, the accused got some
cannabis and went out onto the balcony.
"(The intern) will tell you that the accused gave him some of the cannabis joint to smoke."
During the conference, Orkopoulos allegedly committed an act of indecency at a hotel
where they were staying.
Ms Wilson said that on the first night, Orkopoulos left the Travelodge where they were
staying to sleep in his Parliament House office, telling the boy he "was not able to trust
himself".
The next night, at the Mariners Hotel in the inner-Sydney suburb of Woolloomooloo,
the intern claimed Orkopoulos came into his room with a joint in his hand and began talking
about anal sex.
"He laid down on the bed beside him and began to massage the boy's chest whilst talking
about anal sex between men," Ms Wilson told the court.
The boy had said he flinched after Orkopoulos said, "I'd love to have you".
Orkopoulos had then left the room, saying, "You're not ready, son, are you?", Ms Wilson said.

Fed: Flu fears could drive petrol prices lower
By Colin Brinsden
CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - Motorists could see a five cent drop in petrol prices during
the next fortnight as the global oil price falls on fears of a swine flu pandemic.
Pump prices touched a seven-week high last week as oil prices, and a range of other
commodities, rose on tentative signs of improvement in the global economy, Commonwealth
Securities economist Savanth Sebastian said.
However, in recent days a new concern has turned the oil price on its head.
"The possibility of a swine flu pandemic has seen a sharp reversal in the global oil
price," Mr Sebastian said on Tuesday.
"Traders continue to weigh up concerns of how severe the swine flu is likely to be,
and if so, the significant impact it is likely to have on global air travel."
The potential for a drop in jet fuel demand is weighing on the global oil price.
The latest weekly petrol price report by the Australian Institute of Petroleum shows
the national average price for unleaded petrol rose 0.6 cents per litre to 118.9 cents
in the past week.
The metropolitan price rose 0.6 cents per litre to 118.8 cents, while the regional
price average gained 0.3 cents per litre to 119 cents.
"While the possibility of swine flu is dire, motorists are likely to benefit from an
improvement in pump prices," Mr Sebastian said.
In recent days the wholesale petrol price has started to fall, and in Australian dollar
terms, the Singapore unleaded petrol price has fallen by more than 11 per cent in just
the past week.
"If the current price falls are able to be sustained then motorists can expect prices
to fall by around five cents a litre over the next fortnight," he said.

Qld: Shooting "unavoidable": police
By Evan Schwarten and Gabrielle Dunlevy
BRISBANE, Aug 17 AAP - Queensland police have defended two north Queensland officers
who shot a man early today, saying they had no alternative when he ran at them with a
knife.
A 31-year-old man is in a serious but stable condition in Cairns Hospital after he
was shot three times outside a home in Edmonton, south of Cairns, about 3am (AEST).
Cairns Acting Superintendent Maurice Carless said officers called to the address in
Fitzmaurice Drive by a number of concerned residents were confronted by the man armed
with a knife.
They tried to negotiate with him but he ran at them.
Supt Carless said two senior constables fired a number of shots, striking him in the
body, arm and leg.
He received treatment at the scene from ambulance officers and a local doctor before
being taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery.
"From early indications it appears the actions of the officers were justifiable and
unavoidable," Supt Carless told AAP.
He said the two officers were receiving counselling.
Senior investigators and forensic staff are at the scene and police from the Ethical
Standards Command are expected to arrive later today to overview the investigation.
The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) has also been advised.
Premier Anna Bligh said she would not jump to any conclusions about whether police
used excessive force or not.
Ms Bligh said the public could be assured there would be a thorough investigation.
"Until that investigation has been allowed to proceed I think it would be premature
for anyone to be speculating about the causes or any of the outcomes," she told reporters
in Brisbane today.
"Our police are out there doing a very tough job and they're often in a very dangerous situation.
"Equally, citizens are entitled to expect reasonable behaviour from our police. So,
let's wait and see before we jump to any conclusions."

Fed: Roberta Williams moved to tears by Underbelly actor
SYDNEY, April 9 AAP - Former gangland wife Roberta Williams says she was moved to tears
by the portrayal of her good friend, hitman Andrew Veniamin, in the Nine Network's series
Underbelly.
But the former wife of jailed gangster Carl Williams has little else positive to add
about the controversial drama, saying it's so off the mark it's a comedy.
Williams told Sydney radio station 2Day FM she thought Damian Walshe-Howling gave an
excellent performance as Veniamin.
"The guy who plays Andrew ... he actually played him well," she told 2Day FM.
"There were some parts in it where I had a little cry because he reminded me of him
and we were really good friends and very, very close."
She added that she felt like her "whole world crushed down on me" when Veniamin was killed.
Williams said she was initially furious when she heard the series was being made, but
has since decided to treat it as a piece of humorous fiction.
"I got into it and thought, this is a comedy, not reality, it's humorous," she said.
Williams has been very vocal in her criticism of actress Kat Stewart's portrayal of her.
"I certainly don't talk the way she does," Williams said.
"I sound like some real Aussie chick who comes from the slums of god knows where.
"Sometimes, yes, I swear, I yell and scream like the police would've heard on lots
of listening devices in our home, but I don't conduct myself in the manner they're portraying
on the show."
Williams also said she was more prudish than Underbelly made her appear and had never
taken the drug ecstasy.
"I'm not one of these chicks who spasmodically has sex wherever it's desired like they
portray me on the show," she said.
"I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to things like that."
Williams, who speaks to her ex-husband most days, said she never really feared for
her life during the time of the gangland killings.
"I fear more that my children are going to be run over standing on the side of the
road than being killed in the, as they call it, Melbourne gangland war," she said.
Her main concern these days is finding somewhere to live.
The ex-wife of Melbourne's most notorious gangland killer revealed she was having trouble
getting a rental property in her name.
"My name, I don't know whether they think a house full of gangsters coming over or
whatever it may be that narrow minded people think in their stupid little worlds," she
said.
"It's been an emotional rollercoaster, there are days where I smile and laugh and I
guess people don't see me at night crying about what life was and what's ahead of me."

Vic: Six months' jail for pokie addict who stole from cemetery
MELBOURNE, Dec 6 AAP - A poker machine addict who stole more than $95,000 from the
cemetery where she worked to fund her addiction has been sentenced to two-and-a-half year's
jail.
But payroll officer Marlene Patricia Jack, 55, will only serve six months after County
Court judge Roland Williams today suspended two years of her sentence.
The judge said she had shown shame and remorse and had cooperated with authorities
and had pleaded guilty.
Jack stole the money from the Fawkner Cemetery payroll in 127 transactions between
August 2003 and June 2005.
She had gone to her employer and admitted her crimes in fear of being picked up in
an audit by the state government.
Handing down his sentence, Judge Williams said there had been mitigating circumstances
that included Jack seeking help from Gamblers Anonymous as well as addressing an audience
on the evils of gambling.
But the judge said that a revelation that Jack had gone to a poker machine just three
weeks ago where she spent $20 but had not told her counsellor, showed a sign of dishonesty.
"I have to conclude your honesty is in question and the extent of your rehabilitation
is not clear," the judge told Jack.

Fed: TV mirrors life for star of edgy new drama
By Erin McWhirter, TV Writer
SYDNEY, Dec 22 AAP - A tattooed young hand rams the gear lever into first, wheels spin
and the car slams through a supermarket's front window - alarms sound instantly.
A chain hooked onto the towbar of a panel van wraps around a free standing ATM, the
driver accelerates and within 30 seconds the criminal mission is accomplished.
This is the world of fast cars, ram-raids and underworld dealings - the rebel land
of television series Dangerous.
Joining seasoned actors Joel Edgerton and Brooke Satchwell are new kids on the block,
Paul Pantano, Nicole Da Silva and Vico Thai, in their first regular roles in an Australian
drama.
From the creator of multi-award winning drama Love My Way, the pay television program
brings explosive action to the screen - a tale of forbidden love set against the culturally
diverse backgrounds of western suburbs street crime and the affluence of Sydney's eastern
suburbs.
Satchwell stars as Donna, an ambitious young girl, from the power side of Sydney who
hooks up with Dean, played by Khan Chittenden, a flamboyant young criminal and head of
his own street gang - comprising Joe (Pantano), Riz (Thai) and the gutsy EC (Da Silva).
Watching over Donna is cynical detective Mark Field (Edgerton), who runs the task force
hell bent on busting the gang.
While for most actors working on Dangerous the script is intense and revealing, for
Thai it resembles his life growing up.
For Thai, of Asian decent and who was raised in Bankstown where the program is filmed,
these scenes are all too familiar.
"As a kid you really had to be tough in this area, if you weren't tough or didn't look
tough you would be picked on," the 25-year-old told AAP.
"You had to keep your tough face on. Doing this has been a crazy experience for me,
I grow up in the this area and knew that so many stories needed to be told. In society
people ignore what's going on in the suburbs and concentrate on the happy side of life,
rather than the real struggle for survival in these areas."
Acting has long been part of Thai's life, however Dangerous is his first major television
role and his biggest challenge was portraying Riz with authenticity.
"Being so familiar with the area, it's not a hard task to bring the character out,
but it's hard in a sense where you don't want to corrupt the character," he said.
"You want to bring the authenticity and the realness for viewers to decide for themselves
how hard it is out there."
With most scenes filmed during the night, the cast and crew endured 12 hour days, sometimes
beginning at 2am.
Da Silva, who up until Dangerous had enjoyed a six month stint on hospital drama All
Saints, says she relished playing the only female member of the gang.
"I have never played a character like this, it's completely new," the 25-year-old said.
"It's not often you get a role at 25 that is playing a 19-year-old, that has the strength
and street cred (credibility) of EC. But a lot of the time you are pegged into these roles,
because you are either pretty or you don't work.
"But this is awesome, because that side of things doesn't matter. To be in a gang with
a group of boys that have instant respect ... it's been great."
The rising star has overcome a lot of hurdles during filming, including learning to
drive a manual like a sleek car enthusiast, instead of bunny-hopping into a ram-raid.
Coping with highly emotional scenes has also been testing.
"I did a big emotional scene the other day and just sustaining it and finding the reality
in that was quite harrowing," Da Silva admits.
"You are completely drained, absolutely wasted, and just ready to curl up into a ball
and go to bed and nurture yourself somehow. Your body doesn't know any different, it thinks
something is wrong because you are really upset, when in reality you are just acting it.
You are literally seeking out cuddles, hugs and general support from people because you
feel empty and a bit weak after a scene like that."
The core of the script is the bond the gang share and the actors agree portraying their
friendship wasn't hard.
"In the script the gang have been together since they were seven, so 12 years," said
24-year-old Pantano.
"When we first met we all clicked, so we didn't have to work too hard on that. Before
we started shooting in rehearsals we worked on it and now we all hang out after work and
stuff. Becoming friends is something that just happened, which is great."
An actor since he was eight, Pantano has featured in TV programs including ABC's Wildside
and won the young actors category at the 1998 Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards for
police drama Water Rats.
His other TV credits include Stingers and All Saints.
"The last few years have been really quiet for me, so I have another job selling and
brewing coffee," he said.
"It's hard not doing what you want to do because acting is my passion. But good roles
aren't easy to come by - and when they do you just hope and pray you get them.
"Thankfully my prayers have been answered."
Dangerous premieres on Foxtel's entertainment channel FOX8 on January 16 at 8.30pm (AEDT).

LinuxIT announces solutions for government and public sector.
M2 PRESSWIRE-25 September 2002-LINUXIT: LinuxIT announces solutions for government and public sector (C)1994-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
RDATE:09252002
LinuxIT has today announced the availability of Linux and Open Source solutions tailored to meet the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) guidelines in the U.K.
The recent guidelines published by the OGC gives justification for the adoption of Open Source Software in the public Sector. Guidelines and advice are always easier to give than implement but where can organizations and public bodies find companies to help and who can advise and help them along the `Open Road`?
LinuxIT is the leading Independent provider of Open Source solutions whose staff have been implementing mission critical applications in the private sector since 1998. These solutions have been reviewed to meet the requirements of the public sector, where the key criteria for purchase are value for money and open standards.
Peter Dawes, Sales Director commented " There are many companies that can provide a software package or Linux operating system but few that actually know how to integrate these into a viable solution that services the public or private sector. This is where LinuxIT`s key expertise has been used to create the OSS Solutions. Our independence but close alliances with the software publishers help us meet our aim to help our customers make sense of the Open Source world and implement solutions that work." OSS-Solutions from LinuxIT have all been designed to save costs across the entire lifecycle, from implementation through cost of maintenance.
They can be implemented in part to service the needs of a particular function or department as well as a complete infrastructure review.
The component OSS-Solutions are designed for the following business processes;
Consolidation - servers often proliferate for back office processes with each new application mandating new machines. The LinuxIT consolidation program is designed to service the diverse requirements of file/print/email/database from a reduced number of servers. By taking advantage of the machine efficiency of Linux, reduced licensing costs and overhead of support and maintenance The LinuxIT consolidation program can significantly cut the running costs of the systems.
Migration - Many applications running on Unix and Microsoft Operating Systems can be replaced by a LinuxIT system. The increased efficiency means less hardware costs, reduced software licensing and a decrease in the maintenance and support costs.
Desktops - Replacement of desktop software with viable alternatives that provide the functionality of a familiar interface and office packages. The LinuxIT Desktop solution allows users to focus on working rather than the operations of the machine.
Security - Networks are often the subject of inappropriate use both from the internet as well as from internal staff. The LinuxIT Security Solution provides full time monitoring of your networks, reporting on vulnerabilities and abuses across all operating systems and all platforms.

Politicians told to get election process going.
Provided by 7DAYS.ae
The UN envoy to Iraq yesterday urged politicians to get moving on a key provincial election law that remains bogged down in controversy over the administration of the oil-rich province of Kirkuk."It is necessary to hold the provincial election at the end of this year, or at least by early next year," Staffan de Mistura told reporters after meeting Iraq's most respected Shia cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Najaf."There is no justification to delay this election," he said in the central holy city.
Iraq had been due to go to the polls on October 1 but the long-awaited legislation to oversee the ballot has faced repeated delays over the political handling of the disputed northern province.MPs failed to agree on the electoral law before parliament went on summer recess from August 6 to September 9."There are risks if this election is not held because we will face the issue of the provincial councils being illegal, when the period is over," de Mistura said. The elections are now expected to be postponed to early 2009 because parliament has yet to pass the law. However, an election commission member said that if parliament passed the legislation by September 15, the vote could still be held this year.

craigslist and craigconnects Founder Craig Newmark Announces Campaign to Support Veterans and Military Families.
SAN FRANCISCO, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- craigslist and craigconnects founder Craig Newmark today launched a month-long campaign to support non-profit and government organizations that successfully work with veterans and military families. The campaign is part of his craigconnects initiative launched in March, and includes a $100,000 grant challenge for four highly respected non-profit veterans' organizations, as well as extensive social media outreach by Newmark and the organizations involved.
"A lot of people do a lot of good work to help military families and vets, and I'd like to bring attention to them and to provide some direct support," said Newmark.
The non-profit organizations selected for the campaign are Blue Star Families, the Bob Woodruff Foundation, the Intrepid Foundation, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. The four will participate in a grant challenge to raise funds from their existing and new supporters.
"These guys really get the job done, effectively providing services and advocacy where they're needed," said Newmark.
Newmark said he will donate a total of $100,000 to the four organizations based on the number of donations they receive during the challenge, rather than the amount of money they raise. "What I want to do with craigconnects is help build involvement, not just raise money. All non-profits need money, but what they really need are supporters who will be there long-term. I hope everybody will come to our site, check out these groups, and decide which they want to support."
He added that he is also using social and traditional media to support government agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs and local VA medical centers. "They're starting to use social media to provide better customer service and outreach to our veterans," he said. "I want people to know about the good stuff they're getting done."
Additionally, the non-profit organizations will participate in craigconnects' extensive social media effort through Twitter, Facebook, and the craigconnects website. Guest authors on the site will include several individuals prominent in the field of veterans support, including NASCAR CEO Brian France and entertainer Eddie Money. Newmark said guest authors will write about the organizations and issues they support.
craigconnects is Newmark's personal, Web-based initiative aimed at helping people work together for the common good using the Internet. In addition to veterans' organizations, the initiative spotlights many other organizations and agencies working in the areas of community building, connectivity, journalism integrity, open government, service and volunteering, and technology for social good.

FEEDBACK: Durbin Will Make Payments More Secure.(Bank Think)
Byline: Liz Garner
Re: "Michaels Breach Is Warning on the Durbin Amendment," May 27
Camden Fine's article misses the point. Independent analysts have found that U.S. banks are not doing enough to protect against fraud because their ability to transfer so much of those costs on to merchants doesn't leave them with the right incentives.
The Mercator Advisory Group, for example, has said that the Durbin amendment actually provides a "carrot" to entice U.S. banks and credit unions away from outdated 1970's magnetic stripe debit card technology that is unsafe for banks, retailers and consumers. A June Consumer Reports article said that "the U.S. and some nonindustrialized countries in Africa" are among the only nations still relying on this technology.
Why hasn't the U.S. adopted more secure payments technology?
The answer is simple: Financial institutions push enough of the fraud losses on to merchants that they make more money doing nothing than by investing in improvements to the system that would reduce fraud.
Without changes to the current dysfunctional payments card system, the right incentives may never exist for financial institutions to make this investment in consumer safety.
In the current system, card networks reserve the right to charge a merchant back for a fraudulent transaction, in which case the merchant is out the sale and merchandise.
As a result, merchants are bearing billions of dollars of fraud losses in the system.
The Federal Reserve's own survey found that merchants bear 43% of all losses, and that rises to 76% if it's a transaction at the gas pump or over the Internet, which is known as a card not present transaction.
I completely agree that data breaches are a very serious issue, which is why merchants go to great lengths to protect their brand and their customers from a data breach.
Some companies spend tens of millions of dollars to comply with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards, but the moment a merchant is breached they are no longer considered PCI-compliant and they are on the hook for many of the costs associated with the breach, including excessive fines from the card networks.
And let's not forget that financial institutions are responsible for more than 20% of all data breaches according to the 2011 Verizon Data Breach Report.
But liability is not the bigger picture issue here.
For the benefit of American banks, retailers and consumers, the focus needs to be on fraud prevention, which is exactly what the Durbin amendment does by requiring the Fed to take into account fraud prevention costs expended by all parties in the payments chain - networks, issuers, acquirers, merchants and consumers.
The Durbin amendment is a positive first step toward repairing the broken payments card market that has stifled innovation in the U.S. payments card industry for years.
There is no good reason the U.S. is dependent upon 40-year-old technology when our counterparts in the rest of the industrialized world have realized the shortfalls of magnetic stripe technology.
And there is really no good reason for U.S. megabanks to incentivize their customers to use signature magnetic stripe technology over entering a PIN when fraud on signature transactions is more than seven times higher than on PIN.
Of course, the reason for it (though it's not a good one) is that megabanks make more swipe fee revenue on signature transactions.
Unfortunately the biggest losers in the current broken payments card system are American consumers.
In the June 2011 Consumer Reports article, Richard Oliver, executive vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta and director of the Fed's Retail Payments Risk Forum, said it best, "We're falling behind the rest of the world in fraud protection, and I'm afraid American consumers are getting the short end of the stick."
When there is a clear need to protect American consumers from our broken payments card system that has left us trailing the rest of the world in investing in more secure payment card technology, it makes no sense to use a recent data breach as a reason to delay the Durbin amendment - the much-needed carrot to entice banks and credit unions away from 1970s technology; rather, it is all the more reason to point to the breach as a reason why debit swipe fee reforms are more important than ever.

LinkedIn IPO recalls dot-com boom.(News)
Byline: Michael Liedtke Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO There was an unmistakable echo of the dot-com boom Thursday on Wall Street.
LinkedIn, a trailblazer in the online networking craze, went public with a roaring stock offering. Within minutes, shares were trading at twice the value set by the company.
Buyers crowded the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, and financial news networks flashed LinkedIn's stock price urgently all day. By the closing bell, the company had a market value of $9 billion, the highest for any Internet company since Google had its initial public offering seven years ago. Millionaires and even one billionaire were made, at least on paper.
The stock, issued at $45, went as high as $122.70 just before noon and closed at $94.25 on a trading volume of 30 million shares. All this for a Mountain View, Calif. company that skeptics say amounts to an online Rolodex, a place on the Internet for professionals to post resumes and connect with one another and potential employers.
It was enough to remind some people on Wall Street of the heady late 1990s and the debuts of companies like Netscape Communications and, more infamously, long-forgotten names like Pets.com and Webvan. Investors wondered whether LinkedIn will be a precursor to another financial frenzy in Silicon Valley.
"I definitely think this will be a catalyst," said longtime technology investor and analyst Michael Moe, CEO of Global Silicon Valley Asset Management. "Investors who like growth stocks have been stuck in a desert for a long time, and now it's like they have found this great pitcher of water."
By traditional investment
measures, though, it's difficult for some people to believe LinkedIn is already worth $9 billion. That's 18 times LinkedIn's projected revenue this year. Major Internet companies, including Google, widely regarded as the Internet's most powerful company, trade at an average of about five times projected revenue, according to an analysis by Capital IQ.
Using another measure, price-to-earnings ratio, which compares a company's market value with its profit, LinkedIn finished the day at a staggering 554 reminiscent of the late 1990s tech bubble. By comparison, the average P/E ratio of technology companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 index like Google and Apple is 15.
Two-thirds of LinkedIn's revenue comes from the fees it changes to help companies find and hire works. Francis Gaskins, president of IPOdesktop.com, said that makes the company more like Monster, an employment firm where business depends a lot on the health of the job market.
"Can we stop asking if we are in a bubble now?" venture capitalist Mitchell Kertzman said after hearing LinkedIn stock was above $100. "We are clearly in a valuation bubble."
There's a backlog of privately held companies that could help satisfy this the stock market's apparent thirst for Internet services that specialize in connecting people with common interests.
Studies from Y.J. Jeon et al Have Provided New Data on Science.
"Next-generation sequencing (NGS) methods pose computational challenges of handling large volumes of data. Although cloud computing offers a potential solution to these challenges, transferring a large data set across the internet is the biggest obstacle, which may be overcome by efficient encoding methods," scientists in Inchon, South Korea report (see also Science).
"When encoding is used to facilitate data transfer to the cloud, the time factor is equally as important as the encoding efficiency. Moreover, to take advantage of parallel processing in cloud computing, a parallel technique to decode and split compressed data in the cloud is essential. Hence in this review, we present SOLiDzipper, a new encoding method for NGS data. The basic strategy of SOLiDzipper is to divide and encode. NGS data files contain both the sequence and non-sequence information whose encoding efficiencies are different. In SOLiDzipper, encoded data are stored in binary data block that does not contain the characteristic information of a specific sequence platform, which means that data can be decoded according to a desired platform even in cases of Illumina, Solexa or Roche 454 data. The main calculation time using Crossbow was 173 minutes when 40 EC2 nodes were involved. In that case, an analysis preparation time of 464 minutes is required to encode data in the latest DNA compression method like G-SQZ and transmit it on a 183 Mbit/s bandwidth. However, it takes 194 minutes to encode and transmit data with SOLiDzipper under the same bandwidth conditions. These results indicate that the entire processing time can be reduced according to the encoding methods used, under the same network bandwidth conditions," wrote Y.J. Jeon and colleagues.
The researchers concluded: "Considering the limited network bandwidth, high-speed, high-efficiency encoding methods such as SOLiDzipper can make a significant contribution to higher productivity in labs seeking to take advantage of the cloud as an alternative to local computing."
Jeon and colleagues published their study in Evolutionary Bioinformatics (SOLiDzipper: A High Speed Encoding Method for the Next-Generation Sequencing Data. Evolutionary Bioinformatics, 2011;7():1-6).

"In the past, if an organization wanted to make 3D models available to non-technical staff, they had to purchase an additional copy of their CAD software, often for thousands of dollars," said Terry Baker, president and CEO of TGS. "With 3Space Assistant, the organization can give its staff the ability to import, view and work with 3D CAD and VRML files to integrate into sales and technical presentations, marketing literature, Web sites, technical product documentation and training manuals for a fraction of the cost."
With 3Space Assistant, users can view files from popular 3D CAD applications, including Autodesk(R) AutoCAD(R), Parametric Technology Corp.(R) Pro/ENGINEER(R), SOFTIMAGE(R), EDS Unigraphics(TM) and SDRC(TM) Ideas(TM), as well as files from applications that support VRML. 3Space Assistant operates as a stand-alone 3D desktop application, as an embedded in-place OLE server, and within Microsoft Internet Explorer. It supports drag-and-drop for easy file management, and adds true 3D cut and paste to desktop applications.
As an embedded OLE server, 3Space Assistant includes a 3D toolbar and a robust set of editing tools, which can be used to change backgrounds, color, materials, and lights. The materials and position of individual objects within a scene can be independently modified, as well. The desired view can then be saved as a bitmap file and imported into other applications as a static image.
3Space Assistant v2.0 includes a Performance Meter Dialog to measure performance, and a Scene Info Dialog to display information about the scene, including a triangle count. It uses OpenGL for superior rendering quality and supports all OpenGL(R) compatible 3D graphics boards and chips.
3Space Assistant caught the attention of Digital Equipment Corporation in 1996 resulting in the bundling of those 3D/VRML desktop tool with every new Windows NT Alpha(R) and Intel(R) system shipped by Digital.
3Space Assistant v2.0 is sold direct by TGS for $150. (U.S.) for a single copy, with quantity and site licensing available. TGS also offers a Kanji version of 3Space Assistant v2.0 for customers in Japan. For more information about 3Space Assistant v2.0, visit the TGS web site at http://www.tgs.com or call 619/457-5359.

WORLDS INC. AND PSINET SIGN AGREEMENT TO BRING VIRTUAL REALITY ENVIRONMENTS TO THE INTERNET
3-D Interface Lets Multiple Users "Walk" Through and Interact in Virtual Environments
SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Worlds Inc. and PSINet Inc. (Nasdaq: PSIX) today announced an agreement to more widely distribute Internet-based virtual reality environments, pushing forward the future of online social interaction.
The agreement involves two of Worlds Inc.'s revolutionary Internet applications: Worlds Chat, a graphically oriented, 3-D chat and entertainment environment, and AlphaWorld, an Internet experience unlike any other in which users help create a 3-D virtual society. PSINet will bundle the two applications with its award-winning Pipeline individual Internet service.
Both Worlds Inc. services boast a highly intuitive first person 3-D interface along with multi-user capabilities, to give a user the ability to enter a shared virtual reality environment using standard computers and modems over regular telephone lines. Users will enjoy more robust interactivity with other users because their exchanges resemble real time, thanks to the low latency distribution over the PSINet network.
"This agreement offers Worlds Inc. a terrific method of increased distribution over PSINet's highly efficient network," says Dave Gobel, President and CEO of Worlds Inc. "PSINet users will now be able to more easily access our social computing applications and start interacting through their computers rather than simply with their computers."
"The multi-user nature of Worlds Inc.'s environments points the way to the future of the Internet," said Kurt Baumann, vice president of marketing, consumer services for PSINet. "Together, we're bringing human interaction online that was previously limited to the physical world."
The concept behind the Worlds Chat environment is to provide Internet users a more intense and enjoyable experience than what's currently available in online services' chat rooms or through Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The application goes far beyond them thanks to two critical sets of functionality.
One is its first person 3-D interface, which replicates the way people navigate the physical world -- actually letting them "walk" through the environment. Users can select a character and assume an identity as they explore Worlds Chat and interact with other people.
Additionally, AlphaWorld lets users build their own areas in the environment. Citizens of AlphaWorld have the right to own land and build on it, explore their surroundings, and experience its content -- all in the presence of other users. A constantly evolving space, AlphaWorld boasts its own imbedded tool kit and attractions as well as the most interesting and unique content around: the real people who comprise its citizenry.
"We believe this is the next generation of Internet application for everyone, including the newer Internet user," said Baumann. "Worlds Chat and AlphaWorld are user-valued extensions to the services we provide. We'll continue to explore opportunities with companies like Worlds Inc. to bring the full-spectrum of this exciting technology to our customers."
PSINet is an Internet-optimized network which currently has more than 200 points-of-presence (POPS) worldwide including three recently opened in Canada. Internet access options range from modem dial-up and ISDN for telecommuters and small office LANs to dedicated high-speed circuits for corporate connectivity. Pipeline, a PSINet individual service, received PC Magazine's "Editor's Choice" award as the best nationwide Internet Service Provider.
PSINet has defined industry standards and is a leader in technological innovation and new service development. The company has its headquarters in Herndon, Va., with sales and field service offices across the U.S., Cambridge, England, and Tokyo. PSINet is a publicly held company trading under the PSIX symbol on the Nasdaq exchange. Further product, availability and pricing information can be obtained by calling 703-904-4100 through PSINet's Web site at http://www.psi.net/; or by sending an e-mail request to info@psi.com.
