LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 4, 1997--
New version opens URLs, runs inside Microsoft Internet
Explorer, and captures VRML worlds
Template Graphics Software Inc. (TGS) is now shipping 3Space(TM) Assistant version 2.0 with full Internet compatibility for Microsoft(R) Windows(R) NT and Windows 95.
3Space Assistant is an interactive 3D viewer/editor that allows non-technical staff to import, view, manipulate, edit and share 3D CAD, VRML and Open Inventor(TM) files on the Internet and inside desktop applications such as Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. TGS is demonstrating 3Space Assistant at SIGGRAPH '97 in booth 1005.
3Space Assistant version 2.0 features new integrated Internet capability, giving the user the ability to open Internet Web Addresses (URLs) to view 3D files and navigate 3D worlds on the Web. Moreover, 3Space Assistant allows users to capture VRML 1.0 and 2.0 worlds and save them to a local hard disk for later exploration without bandwidth delays. 3Space Assistant also supports Microsoft's active Document technology, which allows users to view and manipulate VRML, DXF and Open Inventor files from within Microsoft Internet Explorer automatically.
"In the past, if an organization wanted to make 3D models available to non-technical staff, they had to purchase an additional copy of their CAD software, often for thousands of dollars," said Terry Baker, president and CEO of TGS. "With 3Space Assistant, the organization can give its staff the ability to import, view and work with 3D CAD and VRML files to integrate into sales and technical presentations, marketing literature, Web sites, technical product documentation and training manuals for a fraction of the cost."
With 3Space Assistant, users can view files from popular 3D CAD applications, including Autodesk(R) AutoCAD(R), Parametric Technology Corp.(R) Pro/ENGINEER(R), SOFTIMAGE(R), EDS Unigraphics(TM) and SDRC(TM) Ideas(TM), as well as files from applications that support VRML. 3Space Assistant operates as a stand-alone 3D desktop application, as an embedded in-place OLE server, and within Microsoft Internet Explorer. It supports drag-and-drop for easy file management, and adds true 3D cut and paste to desktop applications.
As an embedded OLE server, 3Space Assistant includes a 3D toolbar and a robust set of editing tools, which can be used to change backgrounds, color, materials, and lights. The materials and position of individual objects within a scene can be independently modified, as well. The desired view can then be saved as a bitmap file and imported into other applications as a static image.
3Space Assistant v2.0 includes a Performance Meter Dialog to measure performance, and a Scene Info Dialog to display information about the scene, including a triangle count. It uses OpenGL for superior rendering quality and supports all OpenGL(R) compatible 3D graphics boards and chips.
3Space Assistant caught the attention of Digital Equipment Corporation in 1996 resulting in the bundling of those 3D/VRML desktop tool with every new Windows NT Alpha(R) and Intel(R) system shipped by Digital.
3Space Assistant v2.0 is sold direct by TGS for $150. (U.S.) for a single copy, with quantity and site licensing available. TGS also offers a Kanji version of 3Space Assistant v2.0 for customers in Japan. For more information about 3Space Assistant v2.0, visit the TGS web site at http://www.tgs.com or call 619/457-5359.
