NSW: Sydney Airport to get $2m injection for baggage woes

Sydney Airport's troubled $43 million baggage handling system will receive a $2 million
injection to help iron out problems ahead of the Olympics.

Sydney Airports Corporation says it will now spend $2 million improving the system.

Corporation chief executive TONY STUART admits the system has not performed up to scratch.

Mr STUART says the corporation has been doing everything in its power to ensure the
system is operating at peak performance levels for the Olympic Games.

He says they'll also be taking a more direct role in developing and managing the system's
computer software.

A string of mishaps have plagued the baggage system since it went online in May.

Flights were delayed for about four hours on Sunday while a breakdown in the new checked
bag screening system last Wednesday caused delays of about 15 minutes.

Of the $2 million injection, half will be spent on technical software support and the
other half on operational support for airlines.

An extra 50 staff will also be recruited.
