Vic: Elderly women dies after snake bite

MELBOURNE, Feb 15 AAP - An elderly woman bitten by a tiger snake while she was gardeningin her suburban Melbourne backyard died yesterday.

The 1.2m snake bit Barbara Hume, 85, on Monday at her home in Hume Street, Kew.

Neighbours said Ms Hume was unaware she had been bitten by the snake, the Herald Sunreported today.

She collapsed inside the house but later was able to call 000 for help.

Mr Hume was taken to the Epworth Hospital, where she was given an anti-venom injection,but fell into a coma and died early yesterday.

The snake was caught in a passionfruit vine on her property.

Ironically, Ms Hume had told her neighbours only days earlier that she hadn't seena snake in the area for some time.

Wildpro pest control operations manager Ken Keyes, who collected the snake on Monday,said the dry conditions had increased the number of snakes.

"Snakes are more popular in areas where waterways and creeks or forest areas are nearby,"

he said.

Ms Hume's house was less than 1km from the Yarra River in leafy Kew.
