Utah Web site to help victims of identity theft

The Utah Attorney General's Office plans to introduce a Web sitecalled IRIS -- Identity TheftReporting Information System -- to helpvictims of identity theft get critical information to officialsquickly.

The Web site, www.idtheft.utah.gov, won't be available until Nov.1.

Law enforcement officials at the attorney general's 12th annualWhite Collar Crime Conference got a sneak peek at the Web site.

Identity theft victims who have Internet access can go to the Website, create an account and give details about the nature of thecrime.

Mapping software allows a computer to work out what police agencyis responsible for investigating the crime, and it sends an e-mailnotifying the correct agency.

An officer can then contact the victim to verify his or herinformation.

The Web site also provides information about how people can avoidbecoming identity theft victims and any current legislation againstthe crime.

Victims who do not have access to the Internet can go to victimsadvocate centers, which will be set up around the state. At thevictims advocate centers aides will be on hand to answer questionsand help victims report crimes.

The IRIS is designed to be implemented in three phases. The firstphase, which will come online Nov. 1, allows victims to alertauthorities.

Phase two will allow authorities more access to the database forbetter evidence gathering. Phase three will allow merchants andfinancial institutions to receive fraud alerts and upload anddownload images of bad checks or alleged identity thieves.
